The Utah Jazz pushed their record above .500 with a win over a bad Eastern Conference team Wednesday. The Charlotte Bobcats are just 9-25 on the season and were outmatched in this one the second the ball went up. The Jazz abused the lowly Cats in the paint as Big Al Jefferson scored 26 on 11 of 15 shooting while grabbing 9 rebounds. Paul Millsap chipped in 19 points on an efficient 8 of 12 shooting night and filled other boxes on the stat sheet as well by recording 5 boards, 5 dimes, and 3 blocked shots. Gordon Hayward continued his lights-out shooting from behind the money line as he hit on 4 out of 5 triples. The Jazz shot 45% from downtown and 54% from the field.
The Win improves the Jazz November record to 4 wins and only 1 loss. January should be favorable to the Jazz who now sit in the 9 hole in the Western Conference playoff picture. The Jazz are 1.5 games behind the 8 seed, Portland (19-15) and just 2.5 games behind the 6 seed, Houton (21-16).
9 games remain for the Jazz in the month of January. A look ahead reveals a stretch on the schedule where the Jazz should take advantage of inferior competition. Included in this stretch are Detroit (13-23), Cleveland (9-28), Washington (the worst record in the NBA at 5-28), L.A. Lakers (15-20), and New Orleans (10-25). The Jazz will only face 4 teams with winning records to finish the month: Atlanta (20-14), Miami (23-10), Indiana (21-14), and Houston (21-15).
I wouldn't be surprised to see the Jazz go 10-4 in the month of January. That would improve their record to 26-21 and position the Jazz nicely going into the final 2.5 months of hoops before the playoffs.
